Practical ways to advocate for employee mental health and well-being

As we mark World Mental Health Day, it’s the perfect time to reflect on how businesses can prioritise wellness, particularly mental health, in the workplace.

Employee health and wellness is no longer a "nice to have" but a necessity. Healthy employees - mentally, physically and emotionally - are more engaged, productive, and motivated, which directly impacts business performance.

But supporting employee well-being doesn't have to be complicated or expensive - simple, thoughtful initiatives can create meaningful change for both employees and employers.

1. Promote a culture of balance

Simple steps, like ensuring employees take their full annual leave and discouraging working over their weekends or during their holidays, can go a long way in promoting a healthy balance between work and personal life.

If your teams don’t have downtime to recharge then you are at risk of burnout, possibly company-wide. By respecting personal time, you build a culture that values well-being as much as productivity.

2. Encourage movement throughout the workday

Sedentary work days can take a toll on both physical and mental health, leading to decreased energy and increased stress. There are a few small adjustments that can make a big difference. Consider encouraging walking meetings, providing standing desks, or introducing “activity breaks” to help employees stay active.

Another option is to launch wellness challenges, like step-count competitions, or provide access to or discounts for fitness apps to promote daily movement.

3. Support Mental Health and Well-being

In line with World Mental Health Day, focusing on mental wellness is especially timely.

Mental health support is crucial for maintaining a productive, happy workforce. Something easy and quick to put into place is signposting access to mental health resources, such as national and local support networks, confidential counselling services, or introducing meditation and mindfulness apps like Headspace and Calm to help employees manage stress.

Additionally, creating designated quiet spaces in the office, where meetings and phone calls are not allowed, promotes deep concentration and a space of relaxation to help employees take short, impactful breaks to reset during the workday.

With it being World Mental Health Day, now is the time to reflect on how your workplace can take tangible steps to support mental well-being year-round.

4. Embrace flexible working

The importance of work-life balance has become more evident than ever. Offering flexible working hours, remote work options, or a hybrid work model can significantly reduce stress and boost employee satisfaction. A more flexible approach gives employees control over their schedules, helping them balance work with personal life more effectively.

An example is creating a ‘flexible work program’, where employees can tailor their work hours and locations to balance their personal and professional needs. Implementing this kind of flexibility can help to reduce turnover, as employees feel more supported in managing both their careers and personal commitments.
